Art Nouveau Sherlock: The Violinist by Nero749 Art Nouveau Sherlock: The Violinist by Nero749
Why haven't I done this before? Art nouveau + Sherlock + a violin. It seems like such an obvious choice for me! Might have to do more of them... Because I really like how this turned out!

For those who care: I usually first design the background, then paint the main character, then I add the final line art. And when that's all done, I add all the smaller ornaments :)

I actually created a second version of this one, it isn't very different, not at all even, but I can't decide which one to keep in my gallery, so any advice is very welcome!

Oh this is beautiful!! So elegant!! Could I just ask the correct order of reading for the Greek characters? I can read Greek, but certain letters I'm not sure I quite understand why they are there... However, splendid!

There is a try to spell something like ΣΕΡΛΟΚ ΧΟΛΜΣ as it is written in Greek. Another thing I can make out, is the word "ΤΗΣ" wich means her's. Anything else is nonesese. Too bad... If there is going to be another version of the background, which should be saying something in Greek, I'd be glad to make a translation.

I prefer this one. As others have said, the extra frame in the second version steals the show, and makes the picture too dark and wide, too. This version really has that art nouveau atmosphere: the colours and the aspect ratio both work towards that. (Also, since I'm rather strict in my own work about matching any decorative motifs with the subject matter, the motifs in the extra frame were a tad too much for me; I just find it hard to combine Sherlock with traditional ornaments like butterflies, flowers and pretty girls or in fact anything that doesn't have a function (symbolic, thematic or otherwise) in the picture. That said, the tiny white flower motif you use here is great - it's a kind of austere-looking and minimalistic plant, nothing too lush or exotic or kitschy. Suits Sherlock. :D )

And you are the one who started all of this, so I'll go with your judgement ;)
I prefer this one too, especially the AR. And very true you do know how to use the best ornaments that really suit the subject.
I had to add the flowers, it just wasn't as overly ornamental as art nouveau should be :)

This one is my favourite, I think. I like that you can see the details better. In the other the frame stole so much from the picture, even though that one was great too. But this is my choice! :D

This one I think.

Does it just say sherlock homes the violinist in greek letters?

Something like that.... I changed it a bit because I liked certain letters better than others :) You're the first one and only one so far to ask, btw :)

As for your question - I'd keep this one, definitely. The more slender frame fits so much better, both to Sherlock's figure and the here almost fragile art noveaux design. Beautiful work!

I think I like this one better. It might be the slightly unusual ratio that I like more, or that it seems less cluttered, but I'm not sure. One thing I noticed, is that the one with the panels seems to set Sherlock back. They look like they're more in the foreground than he is.
